Alpine Skiing & Ski Gear
What is Alpine Skiing?
Alpine skiing, also known as downhill skiing, encompasses all types of ski sports that involve sliding down snowy slopes on skis. It can be practiced both on-piste and off-piste, and there is also a backcountry variant for those who want to explore the mountain slopes outside the ski resorts.
Alpine skiing is the type of skiing that is typically associated with going on family skiing holidays at ski resorts. The slopes offer something for everyone and every level of experience, and this is probably why alpine skiing is among the most popular forms of recreational skiing.
However, some of the most fast-paced and wild action sports also fit under the umbrella of alpine skiing. It has been an Olympic sport since 1936, and it is subdivided into different disciplines: downhill, slalom, giant slalom, super-g, and combinations of these specialties. The Norwegian athlete Sondre Norheim won the first downhill skiing competition held in Oslo in 1868, and he is considered the creator of the shape of modern skis.
