What Is Water Skiing?

Water skiing is a fun water sport in which athletes are pulled by a towboat, skiing on the surface of the water with either one or two skis. Water skiing is generally practiced in calmer waters such as lakes, rivers, or bays, and it can be performed either as a recreational or competitive activity. Competitive water skiing is divided into three major disciplines: slalom, trick, and jump skiing.

In slalom water skiing, riders combine fast reaction times, strength, and coordination to pass through a slalom course. Skiers embracing this discipline use only one ski that is narrow and long.

Jump water skiing requires two long skis, and it is all about jumping the longest distance after hitting a water ski ramp. In official competitions, skiers have to pass over a ramp, jump the longest distance possible, and get back to skiing without falling. The skier who makes the longest jump wins the competition.

Trick water skiing is a very technical and creative discipline that is being performed on one single finless ski. The skis are constructed in such a way that it is possible to do a line of tricks that at once includes air tricks, surface tricks, wake tricks, and ski-line tricks.

Water skis, bindings, ski rope with a handle, a life jacket, and of course a boat – these are all essentials for water skiing.
